Sauti za Busara receives hundreds of applications as deadline looms
Organisers of the Sauti za Busara festival have received more than 400 applications for the next edition of the festival, which takes place from 8 to 11 February in Stone Town, Zanzibar.
Acts with an intention to perform at the festival have a month left as the deadline for submissions ahead of the 2018 edition closes on 31 July. Subsequent to the close of the application window, a selection committee will meet in August to choose 40 groups to participate at the festival. Half of that number will be from Tanzania; the other half will represent the continent and diaspora.
“Sauti za Busara festivals are vital to us musicians as well as music lovers," the leader of Zanzibar's Tausi Women's Taarab said. "Through the years Busara has managed to promote us, making us stronger. We have learnt a lot from meeting different musicians. We have gained a lot from the various workshops and encounters with musicians and journalists from all over the world."
Some of the local musicians whohave benefitted from the festival’s previous editions include Msafiri Zawose, Jagwa Music, Leo Mkanyia, Jahazi Modern Taarab, Tausi Women's Taarab, Culture Musical Club, Maulidi ya Homu ya Mtendeni and many more.
The festival has also benefitted the local people, as it attracts visitors from all corners of the world, thus creating revenue and employment especially in the tourism sector. In a few years, the festival has witnessed a growth from 3 000 to 40 000 vistors.
