Call for applications: Night Embassy residency for Joburg creatives
Creatives based in Johannesburg, South Africa, are invited to submit applications for a one week mentorship programme courtesy of Jägermeister’s Night Embassy.
The programme seeks to support four creatives from Johannesburg’s nightlife communities by providing funding, production and mentorship. The residency is devised to support creative nightlife communities by providing mentorship and guidance. It is a space for self-expression and exploration of the outer limits of Johannesburg’s vibrant nightlife.
Interested creatives can apply here before 13 August.
Applications will be selected by a creative board comprising Theresho Selesho, Jana Hamman, Lelowhatsgood, Day Day Marumo and Thuli Keupzz. The mentors will educate, inspire and support the successful applicants to develop their event programmes. Participants will be given a purpose-fit space somewhere in Johannesburg that suits their needs. They will be granted total autonomy to use it in any way they envision, building a creative kingdom for themselves and their communities.
The Night Embassy team will provide participants with:
- A curation fee of R50 000 (this fee is the same for an individual or a collective).
- A promotion budget of R15 000.
- A production budget of R250 000.
- A location and production crew.
- A programme during which participants will be educated and inspired by the aforementioned creative board and other seasoned professionals in nightlife. During this time, Nightlife Embassy will help them develop and prepare an entire programme (creative, promotion, logistics, production, finances, etc.). The creative board will also be available for support while the Night Embassy programme is live.
As ambassadors of the night, the participants will be asked to:
- Come up with their own ideas of curating an event, concept, installation, performance or exhibition in a Johannesburg location for five days.
- Communicate their concept in a clear way.
- Be involved in all production-related activities of the programme along with their support team.
- Include their community in the project, whether that means involving community members directly or getting them to attend the programme.
- Be able to keep track of their promotion and finances.
“The Night Embassy Johannesburg is about to open its doors across four different urban locations and we want to embark on this journey with you and your community,” Jägermeister experimental manager Bea Theron said. “Parties, installations, poetry, dance, streetwear, design and all conceptual art that comes to life at night.
“The only limit at the Night Embassy is your imagination. Jägermeister welcomes artists from any background, age and level of experience: the Night Embassy is open to all bold thinkers committed to going from creative concept to creation. These selected projects shine a light on possibilities for our future nightlife and foster a strong sense of local community.”
