Tommy WÁ

Bio

Tommy WÁ is a free-spirited songwriter, guitarist, poet, visual storyteller and artist born to a multicultural family in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria, and later spent most of his teens living in the federal capital (Abuja). To attain a Bachelor's degree in Political Studies and Sociology, he moved to Ghana in 2013 a country graceful enough for the grooming of an artistic interest that has been perceived by a good many to be authentic in expression. All of these have accumulated to a perception of his realities, through which he has been able to manifestly compose music and convey the familiar with new eyes. Oluwatomiwa Oyakhilome Suleiman considers himself an artist with multi - soulful genres at the brim of his DNA, out of which he currently offers an introspective organic blend of groovy Afro Indie-Folk acoustics and poetic monologues. Written in English [fluent, pidgin, and Yoruba(lized)], his works are built on rich folkloric native wisdom through which he brings to light a sub/conscious knowledge that has the potential of being mutual, offering closure to his listeners.

Before immensely identifying with the art of performance, under his Moniker "Tommy Maverick", he released his debut effort Me in me a four-song solo EP in 2016. The following year, he takes a long break from the studio, becomes a musical nomad, busking across cities and suburban locations in Ghana and Nigeria, headlining concerts and festivals, exploring various art spaces as well as curating intimate live shows in alternative styles. In the highlight is Cafe sessions -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STvVNozryNs&t=274s

With significant epiphanies leading up to January 2019, he decided to return to the scene, changing his stage name to 'Tommy WÁ'. Later that year, he released the Afro - Folk opera Come and Go, followed by a demo compilation in 2020 titled Operation Guitar Boy shared exclusively with industry friends and Familiar beings (a name tag used for his fans).

In the highlight of singles and collaborations is 'Gravity' featuring Abuja Indie-Rock Band 'The Isomers' released in May 2021. https://spark.adobe.com/page/hmrfRR2M4sKKa/ Sonically, the music production reflects the themes of gravity, drawing inspiration from the works of Alt-J, Twenty One Pilots, and Bon Iver. Tommy WÁ is also at the recording phase of his next effort and currently on a solo Living room tour which began in July 2020 as a way to bring music to people in their homes during the global pandemic. He has now performed in more than 30 Homes (Lagos, Abuja, Kumasi, and Accra combined).
