Rocky Dawuni

Bio

Rocky Dawuni is a Ghanaian reggae star based in the US. Born to a military cook in a barracks in Ghana, Dawuni is the second of eight children. The young Dawuni was a good student, earning good grades before his father relocated to the family’s village, where, now retired from the military and being from royalty, he was soon made Chief. Prior to settling the family in the village, the older Dawuni had been posted to Egypt, where Rocky absorbed some influences. He had been also been exposed to diverse cultures within the barracks. This diversity would later show up in Rocky’s music.

Rocky was admitted into the University of Ghana, Accra to study philosophy and psychology. While there he discovered the music of Fela and Osibisa. He also discovered reggae and soul and funk.

He formed a band called Local Crisis and the group performed original compositions with a toy keyboard and an acoustic guitar. To record a demo, Rocky sang into a tape recorder. Somehow Local Crisis was able to get a gig by a promoter who was impressed with the passion shown by the apparently unorganised bunch. Still, the audience at the gig appeared impressed and from there the band had made a name. This period brought Rocky a manager Cary Sullivan, who was based in the United States. The partnership survived and Rocky joined Sullivan in the US, living on and off in Ghana.

1996 brought ‘The Movement’, Rocky’s first album. It yielded the hits ‘What Goes Around’ and ‘Sugar’. He cracked the international scene with the Putamayo collection (1998). There his song ‘In Ghana’ was collected with songs from Lucky Dube, Burning Spear and others. A second album ‘Crusade’ was released in 1998 as well. ‘Awakening’ came in 2001. By 2010 he had released two more albums, and his song ‘African Soccer Fever’ was used in the FIFA World Cup video game. He contributed to the Amnesty International benefit album ‘Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur’.

Rocky has performed at several high profile events, including the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCC) in Warsaw, Poland and at the Montreaux Jazz Festival.

His biggest accolade and recognition came 7 December 2015, when his sixth album, 'Branches of the Same Tree', was nominated for the 2016 Grammy Awards in the Best Reggae Album category. He is the first ever Ghanaian reggae star to so honoured.
