Rai Roots

Rai Roots is a musical journey — a deep exploration of the origins of raï.
Initiated by Jamel Reffes, this unique project comes to life through the collaboration of two prominent voices: Mehdi Askeur (singer of the group ONB) and Mehdi Laifaoui (known for his work with Radio Babel and other ensembles). Together, they pay vibrant tribute to the pioneers of 1970s and 1980s raï, such as Ahmed Zergui and Bouteiba, with striking vintage sounds. Wah-wah guitar, melancholic accordion, and vibrant percussion recreate the raw and authentic atmosphere of the genre’s early days.

Rai Roots is more than just a musical project — it’s a celebration of heritage, a bridge between generations that reveals the timeless richness of raï music.
