Nhlanhla Mahlangu

Bio

Nhlanhla (born Daniel Mahlangu Mahlangu on 12 May 1989) is an artist from South Africa.

Mahlangu played the clarinet for the big band of a music school named CAFCA (a small music school project in Mamelodi). At home, he was inspired by the example of his brother, a pianist for their church. Alt- hough he first took up the clarinet, Mahlangu started to play the saxophone while he was in high school (grade 10) at the age of 15. By the time he reached the tertiary level, his talent for the instrument (saxophone) was so obvious that he was drafted into his teacher’s jazz band. He quickly developed a love for jazz music and began playing at some Johannesburg clubs while he was still in tertiary.

Although he pursued jazz as his primary interest, Mahlangu was influenced by a diverse range of musical sources, i.e. Gospel, classical, hip pop, kwaito, house music, mbaqanga, and motswako which are really big and most often performed in Moretele Resort (the hosting venue for the annual Moretele Park Jazz Festival).

Mahlangu almost put music aside for a more practical career as an electrical engineer. After spending just a couple of months studying electrical engineering light current at Tshwane North College, the lack of funds to complete his studies and the thought of working in a workshop, caused him to re-evaluate his priorities. He decided that he could only be happy by pursuing music as a full-time career.
