KZN Music House

Bio

The KZN Music House is a recording company with a marketing, distribution and resource centre funded by Department of Economic Development and Tourism and Department of Arts and Culture. Its primary mandate is to record and document South African music especially the indigenous music that is representative of the diverse south African cultural heritage.

As a means of contributing towards the creation of an enabling environment for the music industry, the KwaZulu Natal government provided for the creation of a state of the arts music recording facility with a resident record company and an artists’ Resource Centre. The project has become known as the KZN Music House, under the management of Mbongeni Ngema’s Committed Artists. KZN Music House has two main output areas: the Music Precinct and the Record Company.

KZN Music House's studio facility was designed by Steven Moss of MMP and Richard Mitchell of RM Recordings, to a specific brief by Mbongeni Ngema of Committed Artists. This brief was for a top class recording facility that would enable a huge musical talent pool in KZN to record in their home province and avoid having to historically travel to Gauteng. Construction was started in early 2009 and every effort was made to ensure the demanding specifications of the MMP acoustic were met. All recording and control rooms are freestanding structures with floor slabs that are floated on acoustic isolation materials to meet the low noise threshold required for modem digital records.
