Joey B


Born Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin, Joey B is a talented rapper, singer and songwriter from Accra, Ghana. He makes music in five languages namely English, Ga, Twi, Fante and Pidgin. His music is defined along Afro-beats, hip-hop, RnB, house, dancehall, hiplife and highlife genres. His interest in music began at a tender age. His father’s love for music prompted him to develop a passion for music. He draws his musical influences from artists such as Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Krayzie Bone,Drake, Anthony B and Travis Scott.

In 2009, he signed to a record label called Skillions Records. The label is owned a Ghanaian producer / musician called Jay So. This saw him becoming part of a successful mixtape titled ‘The New Generation Skillions’ which featured all artists from Skillions Records. While at Skillions Records, he featured Edem’s hit single called 'Kate'.

He left the label and began working with a Ghanaian producer ‘Hammer of the Last 2’.

In 2012, he was signed to Black Avenue Muzik record label by an artist called D Black after doing well on a song called ‘Vera’. The two began staging shows and toured Nigeria and Europe. Joey released songs like ‘Strawberry Ginger’ and ‘Chop Kenkey’ which gained massive airplay in Ghana and the U.K. His debut music video ‘Strawberry Ginger' remix ft. D-Black and E.L’ was also released under Black Avenue Muzik record label. In 2013, he headlined shows in Ghana and the U.K. including the Afrobeats Concert in May 2013 in London. His performance caught the eye of the BBC prompting them to feature his song on their Afro-beats Documentary in August 2013.

His ‘Strawberry Ginger’ video was nominated in the Best Discovery Video and Best Hiplife Video categories. He also received six nominations for the prestigious 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). He was also nominated in the following categories: Best New Artiste of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year, Best Hiplife Song of the Year, Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year, Best Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste of the Year for his third hit song ‘Tonga’, Song for Development for his second hit song ‘Cigarette’. He won the Best New Artiste of the Year award at the 2014 VGMA.

Joey B is yet to release an album but he is working on an album whose proposed title is ‘Greater Than’. The album will feature artists like Sarkodie, R2Bees, Shatta Wale, Samini and E.L. and many others.
