Horniman Museum and Garden

Bio

Horniman Museum is a museum in London, U.K. It started when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house with all his collection of objects to visitors. Over the years, the collection has grown and now includes collections of anthropology, music instruments, an aquarium and a natural history collection.

Horniman began collecting objects, specimens and artefacts that illustrate the natural history and and handicrafts of various people around the world around 1860.
He travelled to Egypt, Sri Lanka, Burma, China, Japan, Canada and the U.S. to collect objects. He was well-known as a collector and was often approached by many travellers with specimens and curiosities.

By the late nineteenth century, the collections had accumulated such that Horniman gave up his whole house to them.

The museum is open to members of the public daily from 10h30am until 17h30p and on Christmas day and entrance to the Museum and Gardens is free.
