Bio
Khanyisa Fadi, popularly known as Chuku, is a Cape Town–based music artist originally from NU.6 in Mdantsane, the second-largest township in South Africa. Raised in a vibrant and culturally rich community, Chuku’s early years were shaped by both sport and creativity.
Growing up in Mdantsane, he was an active and accomplished sportsman. In primary school, he captained the cricket team and participated in hockey and rugby. He also competed across the province in table tennis and chess, demonstrating discipline and versatility from a young age. Alongside sports, he briefly explored music through his school choir, though he later stepped away, feeling he hadn’t yet found his voice.
Academically, Chuku excelled in Arts and Culture, Mathematics, and Science. However, it was his deep, almost instinctive connection to sound and music creation that ultimately defined his path—something that became clearer after relocating to Cape Town.
Musically, Chuku draws influence from South African genres such as Spaza, Kwaito, and the iconic Skhanda sound popularized by artists like K.O. These sounds formed the foundation of his artistic identity and continue to shape his style.
His recording journey began in 2011 when he worked on his first song with Blacks, an MC from Enkanini in Khayelitsha. From that moment, he never looked back. In 2012, he joined House of Pleasure Entertainment, and by 2014, he became part of TSP (The Ghetto Movement) based in Delft. During this period, he worked closely with producer TS, releasing two EPs, one mixtape, and several singles.
One of his early highlights was the release of his mixtape BlackMinded, which sold over 90 CD copies in its first week—an impressive milestone for an independent artist. That same year, he shared stages with notable artists including Pzo The Cool Guy, Pro X, Rettax, and Timo Abdul Aziz.
In 2017, Chuku joined Second Fam Records before later transitioning into a fully independent, self-made artist. His growing presence earned him pan-African recognition, leading to a collaboration with Malawian artist Havier Greens and the release of his first official music video. The exposure opened doors for live performances, including sharing a stage with R2Bees during their South African tour.
In 2018, he released his independent single Mbali, which received a warm reception across social media. The track stood out for its humorous lyricism, relatable storytelling, and laid-back delivery. It gained radio play on UCT Radio’s “Monate Drive,” as well as spins on Radio Khayelitsha and Bush Radio. Chuku also expanded his media presence with appearances on YouTube platforms such as Star Child, The Ogees, and Couch Creatives.
Continuing his momentum, he released his long-awaited EP Lazy Raps, featuring standout tracks like Theni Usokolisa and Scenga Impilo. His tribute performance, Ungazincishi Xhosable Mix, inspired by the late Riky Rick, marked another milestone as he reached his first 1,000 views on a Music Colors performance. During this time, he remained active on the live circuit, performing across Cape Town and beyond.
In 2023, Chuku released the AKA Composure Xhosable Mix, paying homage to AKA. He continues...
