Brass for Africa

Bio

Brass for Africa was founded in 2009 with the donation of 30 second-hand brass instruments. These instruments were placed in an orphanage in Uganda and a music project was initiated.

To date Brass for Africa has placed over 200 instruments into orphanages in Uganda and Liberia. Working with local people, teachers and organisations, music programmes and humanitarian projects have been initiated and supported for some extremely disadvantaged children and their communities
.
The opportunity to play music with others is incredibly empowering, giving individuals and their communities newfound self-belief, self worth and confidence. Music is also an effective tool for engaging with young people to promote and teach other life skills.

Among the projects they run is Good Shepherd Home and Bethlehem Orphanage - Kampala.

These two homes are in impoverished areas of Kampala and are run by the Missionaries of the Poor which is an international Roman Catholic institute of Brothers dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. The two homes care for over 300 homeless people, orphans, and street kids. Many of the residents have mental and physical disabilities.

In 2009 Brass for Africa placed brass instruments into the home and helped initiate a music program for the children of the home. The charity funds the twice weekly brass band lessons which are taught by senior staff of the M-lisada Orphanage and our new BfA trained junior teachers. Each home now has a junior and senior band and twice a month the band members from each home attend a "fun day" at the MLISADA orphanage for peer learning and mass band practice.

The music lessons and band practices are a highlight in these children's lives and the new found ability to play and enjoy music has an amazingly empowering effect on the children giving them a sense of self worth, self belief and self confidence.
